Laser cladding

Laser claddingIn laser cladding, both coating (in the form of a powder) and base material are melted. This results in the formation of a diffuse junction between the coating and base material. Unlike in conventional techniques (HVOF, plasma coating), a metallurgical bond is formed and thus both cohesion and adhesion between the coating and base material are very good.

Laser cladding can be used, among other things, to repair machine components. First, the missing material is deposited onto the component. The deposited material can be the same as the material of a component or, when repairing highly stressed components, a broad spectrum of ceramic, metal or composite materials can be used. All of them significantly prolong the life of the repaired component. The deposited material is then machined to the desired shape. A robot-operated laser system can be used for the cladding of irregular and highly complicated components.
